Topsoaring announces its latest member of the Topsky DLG Fleet: TOPSKY 4! The Topsky 4 is a clear winner with many design considerations from the wings, tail group, fuse pod to the elevator pylon to give the modeller the ultimate DLG experience of a high launcher and excellent thermal-flying character.

Here are some of the Topsky 4 design considerations and characteristics:

A. Overall Wing Design:

  1. Topsky 4 is designed with Zone V2 series airfoil. This airfoil design favours a higher launch height.
  2. The use of high modulus spread tow carbon fabric cloth over the wing skin gives the Topsky 4 a higher strength rigidity of about 26% than the average large squares carbon cloth. The wing stiffness is much stronger than the previous full carbon wing.
  3. The high modulus spread tow carbon fabric fabric weight used for the Topsky 4 is 70g/m2, wide width of 25mm and thickness of 0.07mm.
  4. The spar is constructed using expand high modulus carbon tow laid within the spread tow carbon fabric cloth on both upper and lower surface.
  5. Topsky 4.0 has designed with the top-drive aileron system in mind. A 30mm width spread tow carbon fabric is laid top and bottom, along the position of where the top drive push-pull rods run, providing reinforcement strength in the wings where the top drive control rod channel has been made.

  6. Topsky 4.0 is designed as a low-wing DLG. As a low-wing, it gives excellent aircraft controllability. With a low-wing design, it gives less aircraft self-levelling correction, thus providing better thermal indication. In addition, the drag over the wings is significantly reduced. The aileron is also more effective since less control defection provides the desired roll effect, reducing the overall drag in the flight, improving efficiency.

  7. The wing is of a swept back design.

  8. The wing root chord length is 180mm and tapers off nearer towards the wing tip. Coupled with shorter chord length and thinner airfoil, the wing drag is further reduced.

  9. The wing swept back angle is 5 degrees with a chord width reduction ratio of 1.0 to 3.0. This design gives the modeller a higher launch height.

B. Elevator (Tail group section):
  1. The elevator and rudder is produced using light weight, high quality carboline carbon cloth - 39g/m2. This gives a very strong and light weight elevator for a better overall balance of the model.
  2. In the pipeline of future development, the tail group would be made from “carbonline Dbox with fiberglass” or “fiberglass with carbon beam”. This is to provide users more options to choose from.
  3. The stability of the tail section just after the launch release is important to give a high launch. With this consideration, the Topsky 4.0 rudder has been designed with more surface area through the increase of the height at the lower section below the tail boom.

  4. Elevator pylon is produced using a high quality mould. 

    C. Fuselage:

    1. The overall fuselage is thin with further cross-section reduction towards the tail. This is optimised to produce a higher launch height.
    2. The kevlar and carbon strengthener within the sides of fuse pod is positioned forward from the nose and runs to the back of the fuse pod. This increases the overall strength of the fuselage.
The Topsky 4.0 comes a with a new design 4180 fuse pod.
